The Delilah Road site is a 40-acre former sand and gravel pit in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. It operated as a landfill from 1974 to 1980. Although it was permitted to accept only non-hazardous municipal and solid waste, the site received drummed flammable wastes and sludges containing trichloroethylene and lead. EPA sampling in 1982 found groundwater contamination. A creek about 1,000 feet north of the site and a nearby public water supply well were identified as potential exposure concerns. The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL) on September 21, 1984.
EPA identified 14 contaminants of concern at the site. Solid waste contains arsenic, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, chloroform, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, lead, and tetrachloroethene. Groundwater contains cadmium, chloroform, cyanide, lead, mercury, and tetrachloroethene. Chloroform, lead, and tetrachloroethene appear in both solid waste and groundwater.
Cleanup work moved through a single operable unit. A Record of Decision was issued in September 1990, and an Administrative Consent Order was signed by the State and responsible parties in 1994. The State extended municipal water supply lines to nearby homes and businesses that had used private wells, and those private wells were sealed. By 2001, all remedy components were in place, including a soil cap over the landfill, surface water drainage controls, and a groundwater monitoring system. The State determined in 2006 that no further remediation was needed. Construction was fully complete by August 2002, and the site achieved sitewide readiness for anticipated reuse in July 2009. EPA deleted the site from the NPL in October 2009. Human exposure is under control, with no unacceptable exposure pathways identified across the site. Long-term groundwater monitoring remains ongoing.
As of December 2024, one business is operating at the site, employing one person and generating an estimated $1,863,000 in annual sales revenue. Community members and interested parties can review site records in person at the Atlantic County Library in Egg Harbor Township or at the EPA Records Center in New York City.
