Computer Circuits Corporation ran a circuit board manufacturing facility in Hauppauge, New York from 1969 to 1977. The company discharged industrial wastewater into on-site cesspools, contaminating soil and groundwater with copper and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially trichloroethylene (TCE). VOCs also reached unsafe levels in indoor air. The site sits over a wellhead protection area, with 60 municipal drinking water wells within four miles. EPA placed the site on the National Priorities List (NPL) in May 1999, identifying it as a priority for cleanup.
The contaminants of concern are dichloromethane (also called methylene chloride) in air, tetrachloroethene in groundwater, and trichloroethene in both groundwater and air across the entire site. Cleanup is organized under one operable unit covering the whole property. The selected remedy includes soil vapor extraction (SVE), ambient air monitoring, off-gas treatment, and institutional controls to restrict land use.
Cleanup work started with cesspool excavation in 1976 and 1977. The property owner, 145 Marcus Blvd., Inc., installed an SVE system on the north side of the building in 2005 to pull VOCs out of the ground and stop them from entering the structure. EPA added a matching system on the south side in September 2008. Both systems continue to run as designed. Groundwater contamination levels have steadily dropped below safe limits, and indoor air monitoring confirms that levels do not exceed health benchmarks. EPA's 2021 Five Year Review found the remedy protective of human health and the environment. The most recent five-year review was completed in March 2026. The property owner is considering changes to the SVE systems to further address vapors beneath the slab. Physical construction of cleanup work is complete, and the site achieved Sitewide Ready for Anticipated Use status on September 30, 2022.
The building is actively occupied. As of December 2024, five businesses on-site employed 129 people and generated about $18.4 million in annual sales. The site has not yet been deleted from the NPL.
