Overview

The Dubose Oil Products Co. site covers about 10 acres in Cantonment, Florida. It operated as a waste storage, treatment, recycling, and disposal facility from 1979 to 1981. The EPA added it to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) in 1986 after facility operations contaminated soil, groundwater, and surface water.

Twelve contaminants of concern were identified at the site. These include 1,1-dichloroethene, benzene, pentachlorophenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trichloroethene, and xylene (mixed isomers). All were found in both soil and groundwater in the site's single cleanup zone, known as Operable Unit 01.

Cleanup work spanned more than two decades. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection removed contaminated soils between 1984 and 1985. Workers then filled and capped an impoundment area with about 38,000 cubic yards of soil and synthetic covers. A wastewater treatment plant came online in 1993, and on-site soils were treated biologically in 1994. Groundwater and surface water monitoring ran from 1995 to 2003. The full cleanup approach also included draining ponds, removing structures, and installing surface water controls.

The EPA determined in 2003 that cleanup was complete and deleted the site from the NPL in October 2004. A Five-Year Review completed in September 2008 confirmed the remedy protects human health and the environment. Human exposure is under control, and contaminated groundwater is stabilized with no unacceptable discharge to surface water. The site is designated for unlimited use and unlimited exposure, so no further Five-Year Reviews are required. The site is currently not in use but has been assessed as ready for anticipated reuse.

Community members who have questions about the site can contact the EPA's Community Involvement Coordinator or Remedial Project Manager. A Ready for Reuse Fact Sheet and the final Five-Year Review are also available for anyone who wants more background on the site's history and current condition.
