Overview

The Woodbury Chemical Co. (Princeton Plant) is a 5-acre former pesticide and fertilizer formulation and distribution facility in Princeton, Miami-Dade County, Florida. Operations began in 1975. The EPA added the site to the Superfund National Priorities List in August 1990 because facility operations had contaminated soil and groundwater. Fertilizers and herbicides used in the surrounding area also contributed to off-site groundwater contamination.

Cleanup work started in June 1990, when the potentially responsible parties removed contaminated soils from the site. The EPA completed a remedial investigation and feasibility study by June 1992 and issued a cleanup plan, called a Record of Decision, that same month. The selected remedy for the site's one operable unit called for no further cleanup action beyond monitoring. Construction of that remedy was completed in June 1992. The EPA then conducted quarterly groundwater monitoring beginning in 1993 and confirmed the site did not threaten human health or the environment.

The EPA deleted the site from the National Priorities List in November 1995. The site reached "sitewide ready for anticipated reuse" status in June 2006, meaning cleanup goals for current and reasonably anticipated future land uses have been met. All required land-use restrictions and controls are in place, and no unacceptable risks remain. Human exposure is under control across the entire site. The EPA does not require Five-Year Reviews for this site.

Since cleanup, several businesses have operated on the property. These include a farm supply store, a residential development company that purchased the property in 2005, a vehicle maintenance and repair business, and a salvage yard. As of December 2024, one on-site business was operating, employing 5 people and generating an estimated $57,840 in annual sales revenue.

Throughout the cleanup process, the EPA kept residents informed through public notices, fact sheets, and public meetings. Documents related to EPA work at the site are available at the South Dade County Regional Library in Miami. Community members with questions can contact the EPA's Remedial Project Manager, Candice Teichert, by email or phone.
