A chemical and fertilizer mixing plant ran on this 1-acre Greenville, Mississippi property from 1953 to the early 1960s. After the plant closed, the site was abandoned and roughly 225 drums of hazardous materials were left behind along with contaminated debris. The EPA proposed the site for the National Priorities List (NPL), the federal list of the most serious contaminated sites, in October 1981.
The contamination was found in the abandoned drums and surrounding debris material. There is no indication that groundwater was affected. The site's potentially responsible parties, working under oversight from the EPA and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), secured the hazardous chemicals and shipped them to an approved off-site landfill. That work wrapped up by the end of 1982 and addressed all contamination at the site.
Because cleanup is complete, site contamination does not currently threaten people living or working nearby. No unacceptable exposure pathways have been identified, and the EPA has confirmed that human exposure is under control. The EPA deleted the site from the NPL on December 30, 1982, after determining that all cleanup goals had been met. The EPA also determined that no Five-Year Reviews are needed here, meaning no routine follow-up inspections are required. The site reached sitewide ready for anticipated reuse status on March 18, 2016, and has access to EPA's Superfund Redevelopment Program to support returning the property to productive use.
