Overview

Rogers Road Municipal Landfill covers one acre in a wooded, rural area east of Rogers Road in Pulaski County, Arkansas, about 12 miles northeast of Little Rock. The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL) in July 1987 and has since gone through a full cleanup process. It was deleted from the NPL in October 2010, meaning cleanup goals were met and no further Superfund action is needed.

The site had 57 contaminants of concern, all found in soil. These include dioxins and furans, chlorinated pesticides and herbicides, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and chromium, volatile organic compounds like toluene and dichloromethane, and semivolatile organic compounds including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Dioxin was the primary driver of the cleanup.

The cleanup remedy was selected in September 1990 and construction was completed in September 1995. Workers excavated dioxin-contaminated soils and sent them off-site for thermal treatment, which destroys contaminants using high heat. Residual waste left on-site was capped with a soil cover. Institutional controls are in place to prevent activities that could disturb the remedy. Long-term groundwater monitoring continues to confirm that contamination stays stable in place.

Human exposure is under control, and groundwater migration is under control. The site has achieved Sitewide Ready for Anticipated Use status, meaning all cleanup goals for current and expected future land uses have been met and no unacceptable risks remain. EPA conducts five-year reviews at regular intervals to verify the cleanup stays protective over time. The most recent review was completed in September 2025.
