Overview

Parkview Well sits in Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska. Volatile organic compounds turned up in a municipal water supply well in October 1999. Two groundwater plumes were identified: one traced to an industrial property near Engleman Road South, the other to the Case New Holland property. The site was added to the National Priorities List in April 2006.

Nine contaminants of concern have been identified in groundwater. They include 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethene, tetrachloroethene, and 1,4-dioxane. EPA identified these by assessing who could be exposed, measuring chemical levels, and evaluating health and ecological risks.

Cleanup is organized into two operable units. Operable Unit 1 targets groundwater contamination near the Parkview Subdivision. It uses extraction wells, a treatment system, and alternate water supplies. A groundwater extraction and treatment facility became fully operational in August 2010 and treats over two million gallons per day. City water was extended to affected neighborhoods, with connections completed by August 2012. More than 75 residences and one business were connected to city water. Operable Unit 2 addresses the source area through in situ chemical oxidation with sodium persulfate, conducted at three treatment areas from 2010 to 2015, plus monitoring and institutional controls. A restrictive covenant on the source property prohibits drinking water wells and residential use until groundwater restoration goals are met. Groundwater monitoring continues twice yearly. The state took over operation and maintenance responsibilities after long-term response actions concluded.

Physical cleanup construction is complete across the entire site. Human exposure to contaminants is under control, and contaminated groundwater migration is stabilized with no unacceptable discharge to surface water. The most recent Five-Year Review, completed June 17, 2025, found that site remedies are protective of human health and the environment. The site has achieved sitewide ready-for-anticipated-use status. One on-site business employs nine people and generates an estimated $334,000 in annual sales.

Community members with questions can contact the EPA Community Involvement Coordinator, the Remedial Project Manager, or the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy and Environment. Groundwater monitoring remains ongoing, and EPA will continue tracking whether contaminated groundwater stays within the original area of concern.
