Mountain View Mobile Home Estates sits on 17 acres in Globe, Arizona, where Metate Asbestos Corporation once ran a chrysotile asbestos mill. Mill operations left asbestos in soil and debris across the site. The site was added to the EPA's National Priorities List (NPL), a roster of the country's most contaminated sites, in September 1983. It has since been deleted from the NPL, meaning cleanup reached a point where no further listing-level action is needed.
Cleanup began in earnest around 1980. The state provided temporary housing for residents while decontamination work took place. Workers demolished mill buildings, covered contaminated soil with topsoil, and permanently relocated the mobile home residents, a process finished by 1985. Construction wrapped up in April 1988, the same year EPA removed the site from the NPL. The long-term remedy includes a clay or synthetic cover, clean soil on top, fencing, and ongoing inspections. After severe weather, crews inspect the cover, and regular mowing and brush removal keep the site in order. In May 2015, EPA updated the remedy to include Arizona's Declaration of Environmental Use Restriction as part of the final plan.
Asbestos is the contaminant of concern at this site, found in soil and debris. The cleanup addresses risks from people inhaling, ingesting, or touching contaminated air or soil. Human exposure is currently under control. There are no unacceptable pathways for contact with contamination, all cleanup goals have been met, and required land-use restrictions are in place. The site is not classified as a groundwater site. The site achieved ready-for-anticipated-reuse status in March 2008, and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has handled operation and maintenance since January 1986.
EPA completed its seventh Five-Year Review in August 2025. Five-year reviews check whether finished cleanups still protect people and the environment. This review confirmed the remedy is working as intended. Reviews have been conducted regularly since 1991. The review document is available at EPA's Superfund Records Center at 75 Hawthorne Street, 3rd Floor, San Francisco, California, and at the Globe Public Library at 339 South Broad Street, Globe, Arizona.
